VMware: New Rollup Bulletins Simplify VMware ESXi Updating

July 14th, 2018 No comments

VMware ESXi patches are released periodically to resolve issues or address security vulnerabilities – just like any other software product. These updates can either be downloaded automatically through VMware vSphere Update Manager (VUM) or manually by logging in to My VMware. Regardless of delivery means, the contents are the same: a collection of software packages, knowns as VIBs, that are grouped into bulletins to ensure dependencies are satisfied during installation.

Bulletins, Patches, and Rollups

There are two different types of patch bulletins for VMware ESXi: patches and rollups.

For any given VMware ESXi patch release, there is typically, at a minimum, one bulletin that contains the core system packages – esx-base, vsan, and vsanhealth. Often, there are additional bulletins if other packages have been revised in order to remedy bugs or security issues. These types of bulletins, that include a small set of packages, are known as patches in Update Manager.

Occasionally, VMware releases a more comprehensive service pack, known as an Update, that includes the latest versions of all packages that comprise VMware ESXi. These Update releases are classified as rollups in Update Manager.

Rollup Bulletin Now Included in Every Patch Release

In between the large Update releases, however, there has not been a simple workflow for vSphere administrators to use that would ensure hosts are on the absolute latest version of every package. While this can be accomplished with dynamic Update Manager baselines that are configured to include all applicable patch bulletins, some customers may have opted to apply just specific critical patches. In that scenario, over time, hosts may lack many useful fixes and updates that were released since the GA.

Starting in June 2018, each VMware ESXi patch release will also feature an optional rollup bulletin that includes every package that has been updated since GA. This is a straightforward approach to keeping the vSphere infrastructure current, because the Update Manager baseline requires just a single bulletin.

For detailed information on software fixes, each VMware ESXi patch release is described in a KB article, with a link to a child article for each bulletin included in the patch release. Take a look at a recent VMware ESXi 6.7 patch KB for an example.

Takeaway

VMware issues a patch release when software fixes are required – these includes one or more bulletins. Each bulletin includes a set of VIBs, which are the ESXi software packages. Bulletins come in two different types: patch (a few packages) and rollup (complete system). Going forward, all patch releases will include the traditional patch bulletins, and will also be supplemented with a rollup bulletin. This offers a simple way to ensure hosts are running the latest version of every package.

Veeam: Installing patch 4 Veeam Backup & Replication 7.0

August 29th, 2014 No comments

KB ID: 1891
Products: Veeam Backup & Replication
Version: 7.0.0.871
Published: 2014-06-05
Created: 2014-05-30
Last Modified: 2014-06-05

New Features and Enhancements

VMware Virtual SAN (VSAN)

  • In addition to adding basic support (as provided by other vendors), the intelligent load-balancing engine was enhanced to account for VSAN specifics. As the result, for each VM the job will pick backup proxy running on VSAN cluster node with most of the virtual disks’ data available locally. This significantly reduces backup traffic on VSAN cluster network, resulting in minimum possible impact on production environment from backup activities.

Microsoft SQL Server 2014

  • Added support for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 both as the protected guest workload (including application-aware processing functionality), and the back-end database for backup and Enterprise Manager servers.

License key auto update

  • Added automated license key update option to the License Information dialog. With auto-update enabled, the product will check Veeam licensing server periodically for an updated license key, and download and install the key automatically as soon as it becomes available. This feature is particularly useful to the Service Providers and subscription-based customers, and it removes the need to download and install the license key manually each time when the license extension is purchased.

VMware: VMware vCenter 5.0 Update 1b Patch is now available

August 17th, 2012 4 comments

VMware vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1b is a patch release and offers the following improvements:

  • vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1b introduces support for the following vCenter Databases
    • Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Standard ONE Edition Release 2 [11.2.0.3] – 64 bit
    • Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Standard ONE Edition Release 2 [11.2.0.3] – 32 bit
  • vCenter Server Appliance Database Support: The DB2 express embedded database provided with the vCenter Server Appliance has been replaced with VMware vPostgres database. This decreases the appliance footprint and reduces the time to deploy vCenter Server further.
  • Resolved Issues: In addition, this release delivers a number of bug fixes that have been documented in the Resolved Issues section.

vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1a has been removed from the VMware download site due to issues encountered when upgrading with an Oracle database for Windows. vCenter Server Update 1a is replaced by vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1b, which is functionally identical to vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1a and includes the fix for the issue encountered when upgrading with an Oracle database for Windows. Please refer to KB 2032277 and the Resolved issues section of the release notes for more information.

VMware vCenter 5.0 Update 1b Patch is available for download at: https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/info/slug/datacenter_cloud_infrastructure/vmware_vsphere/5_0.
