July 20th, 2012 2 comments

Today I was adding some new HP NC553i 10Gb 2-port FlexFabric mezzanine cards in existing BL460 G7’s.. 3 months ago I’ve installed the latest firmware, the hypervisor installation is VMware vSphere ESXi 4.1 Update 2.. I received this warning messages:

Adapter type: HP NC553i 10Gb 2-oirt FlexFabric Adapter

Solution:

VMware released a KB article KB1035114:

When installing ESX 4.x on the ProLiant BL460c G7, BL465c G7, BL680c G7 and BL685c G7 server blades you are required to include network drivers for the NC551i and NC553i network adapters. These network cards use a controller from ServerEngines (now owned by Emulex), and the drivers are included in the Driver CD for ServerEngines BladeEngine 10Gb Ethernet Controller package (currently at version 2.102.440.0).

Install latest firmware:

Download and install the latest firmware firmware, I’ve installed HP Smart Update Firmware Pack 10.10 (you can install the single FlexFabric Network adapter firmware here)

Download supported drivers:

I’ve downloaded the HP “VMware ESX 4.0/4.1 Driver CD for Emulex OneConnect OCe10102 10GbE Adapter (Network Function)” pack with the following supported drivers:

  • HP NC550SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter
  • HP NC550m Dual Port Flex-10 10GbE BL-c Adapter
  • HP NC551i FlexFabric 10Gb Adapter
  • HP NC551m FlexFabric 10Gb Adapter
  • HP NC552m 10Gb 2-port FlexFabric Converged Network Adapter
  • HP NC552SFP 10Gb 2-port Ethernet Server Adapter
  • HP NC553i 10Gb 2-port FlexFabric Converged Network Adapter
  • HP NC553m 10Gb 2-port FlexFabric Converged Network Adapter
  • HP Flex-10 10Gb 2-port 552M Adapter
  • HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554FLB Adapter
  • HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554FLR-SFP+ Adapter
  • HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554M Adapter
  • HP CN1000E Dual Port Converged Network Adapter
  • HP CN1100E Dual Port Converged Network Adapter

Download source: HP

Install the latest supported driver:

– Start the host and disable the adapter in the BIOS
– Upload driver via SSH/WinSCP/or (if possible) Browse Datastore..
– To install the driver:

esxupdate –bundle=EMU-be2net-4.1.334.0-offline_bundle-654249.zip update

Installation output:

VMware: How to check HBA firmware version without rebooting ESX host

February 25th, 2011 4 comments

I need to find out witch firmware version is running on my HBA without rebooting the ESX host.. I thought this was possible by GUI but couldn’t find it, so I decided to check this by console. Give the following commands:

Navigate to:

– cd proc/scsi/qla or lpfc820
– ls –lia

To view the HBA information:

– cat 6
– cat 7

Result:

It wasn’t so difficult!

Upgrading the HP StorageWorks 4/16 SAN Switch firmware by console

February 18th, 2009 3 comments

Today I started a new project where I had to configure 2 HP StorageWorks 4/16 SAN Switches. The firmware 5.3.0 was installed. The switches are configured with a static ip address 10.77.77.77/24 you can change your laptops ip address to an ip in the specified range and login to the java applet. Another option is to connect the console cable to the switch and configure it by console. I encountered some problems trying to upgrade the firmware by using the java applet.

After changing the ip address and starting the java applet the java applet would not start. I tried different java versions but still the problem remains. The java applet starts loading until “initializing switch details” where it will freeze to load the java applet.

Instead of trying to install all know java versions to start the java applet I had to upgrade the firmware to the latest version by using the console.

I connected the console cable to the switch and powered it up and started HyperTerminal.

clip_image004[10]

1. Type in “admin” to login on to the console

2. Type in “password” to login on to the console

clip_image006[10]

3. Press “Ctrl-c” at this moment we don’t want to change the password

clip_image008[8]

4. Type in “ipaddrshow” to show the default ip address

clip_image010[8]

5. Type in “ipaddrset” to change the ip configuration

6. Press the “enter-key” until you see the DHCP[Off] prompt

clip_image012[6]

7. Type in “on” to turn on the dhcp option

clip_image014[6]

8. To check the version type in “version” to upgrade to the latest version we need first to upgrade to 6.0.0b.

9. Download the firmware extract the files and place the files on an FTP server.

clip_image016[4]

10. Type in “firmwaredownload” to start the firmware upgrade

clip_image018[4]

11. Type in the FTP-Server ip address

clip_image020[4]

12. Type in the location of the firmware files located on the ftp server. Don’t forget to add “release.plist” at the end

clip_image022[4]

13. Type in “y” to upgrade the firmware. You can get a cup of coffee this will take a few minutes.

clip_image024[4]

clip_image026[4]

14. The upgrade completed successfully

15. Start IE7 to load the applet to see if the upgrade had any effect. Browse to the ip address that was assigned by the dhcp server.

clip_image028

16. The login screen will popup

17. Type in the “User Name” and “Password” to load the applet

The swd77 Web Tools popup so the upgrade was successfully and works with my current java version. Now I can use the GUI to upgrade the firmware to the latest version and configure zoning.
