VMware: How to reset the lost or forgotten root password in vCenter Server Appliance 6.5

To reset the lost forgotten root password in vCenter Server Appliance 6.5:

  1. Take a snapshot or backup of the vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 before proceeding. (Do not skip this step.)
  2. Reboot the vCenter Server Appliance 6.5.
  3. After the OS starts, loading the Photon splash press e key to enter the GNU GRUB Edit Menu.
  4. Locate the line that begins with the word Linux.
  5. Append these entries to the end of the line:rw init=/bin/bash

    The line should look like the following screenshot:

  • Press F10 to continue booting.
  • In the Command prompt, enter the command passwd and provide a new root password (twice for confirmation):

    passwd
  • Unmount the filesystem by running this command:

    umount /
  • Reboot the vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 by running this command:

    reboot -f
  • Confirm that you can access the vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 using the new root password.
  • Remove the snapshot taken in Step 1 if applicable.

VMware: Updating vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 to Update 1

Current build VMware vCenter Server 6.0.0 2776510, vSphere client 6.0.0 2741530

 

Note: Supported upgrade paths to VCSA 6.0 U1 include from 5.1 U3 & 5.5.

While on the topic of upgrades, going from VCSA 6.0 to 6.0 U1 is quite simple. First, you’ll need a patch ISO, which can be found on here. You ‘ll notice there are two patch ISOs, FP and TP.

Download VCSA patch from here.

FP
is a full product patch for VC & PSC appliances only.

TP is third party patch spanning multiple products, such as VCSA, vCenter Windows, VUM, PSC appliance and windows.

 

To update/patch your vCenter 6.0 Appliance, please follow the below steps:

  1. Connect directly to vSphere host which running vCenter Appliance
  2. Take a snapshot of VCSA
  3. Connect downloaded ISO file to the VCSA VM
  4. Log in to the VCSA via SSH
  5. Run the following command
    To mount ISO and accept EULA:

software-packages stage –iso –acceptEulas

To stage ISO:

software-packages install –iso

image

 

To see  the staged content:

software-packages list –staged

image

 

To  install the staged rpms:

software-packages install –staged

image

 

shutdown reboot –r patching

image

 

Result

VMware: Manual set static IP-address to vCenter Appliance (VCSA)

When deploying the VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) it will default look for a DHCP address. When there is no DHCP server available the following error is displayed:

NO NETWORKING DETECTED, PLEASE LOGIN AND RUN THE COMMAND /opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_config_net TO CONFIGURE THE NETWORK

 

Solution

1. Press F2 to login

2. Enter default username: root

3. Enter default password: vmware

4. Run command: /opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_config_net

5. Press 6 to setup eth0

6. After allocate a static IP Address to the VCSA the post configuration can be done by using the following URL: 

https://static-ip-address:5480
