Last week I created a little “how-to” for some system engineers to install/upgrade VMware Tools in their test environment. Here’s the translated (public) version:

– VM Summary: VMware Tools – Running (unsupported)

– Select VM > Guest > VMware Tools Install. The Infrastructure Client will mount VMware Tools ISO inside the VM

– Create a directory, type in: mkdir /mnt/cdrom next you need to mount the CD-Rom drive, type in:
mount /dec/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

I started today with some P2V migrations to a vSphere 4.1 environment, after finished the P2V wizard in VMware Converter Standalone the migration started, but… received after 1% completion the following error:
FAILED: MethodFault.summary

Solution:
I used VMware Converter version 4.0.1 build-161434, VMware KB is telling me to upgrade to VMware Converter version 4.3, tried again.. with success

Unsupported VirtualCenter Server Components
The technical preview version of VirtualCenter on Linux does not support the following VirtualCenter server components:
- Embedded database
- LDAP support
- Virtual machine customizations
- Plug-in support
- Virtual Infrastructure Web Access
Unsupported VirtualCenter Server Features
The technical preview version of VirtualCenter on Linux does not support the following VirtualCenter
features and associated products:
- Monitoring
- Alarms
- Schedule tasks
- Topology maps
- Update Manager
- Site Recovery Manager (SRM)
- Getting Started tab
- Converter Enterprise
- Guided consolidation

Still processing all the info from VMworld Europe 2009 I remembered something about vCenter Server that it was available on Linux. I searched on the VMware site and found the beta version. I downloaded the virtual appliance and the installation guide. I Started vConverter to import the VA in to my workstation edition. Ok that went well. While the vm is starting let’s check the installation guide what we need to get it going.

Requirements for Installing VirtualCenter on Linux
Installing VirtualCenter on Linux requires the following items:
- VirtualCenter on Linux appliance
- Virtualization platform, which can be any of the following:
- ESX Server 3.5 or later
- ESX Server 3i version 3.5 or later
- Workstation 5.5 or later
- VMware Player 2.0 or later
- VMware Server 2.0 or later
- Oracle database, version 10 or later
- Browser with a network connection
I think I have everything I need to get started.
